Fractional Resurfacing Q&A

What is fractional resurfacing?

Fractional skin resurfacing is a laser treatment that uses advanced technology to deliver light energy into your skin. Some laser treatments create a uniform pattern of injury to the skin, which effectively removes all of the outermost layers of skin to reveal a layer of fresh, healthy cells.

With fractional skin resurfacing, the laser pattern is broken up into many individual narrow columns of light. This light enters your skin in a pattern, creating microscopic injuries in some tissue while leaving other tiny areas unaffected.

When your body responds, new collagen cells fill in the damaged areas, tightening your skin and smoothing lines and wrinkles. This treatment option is a great fit for acne scarring, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and other signs of aging.

What happens during fractional resurfacing treatments?

Fractional skin resurfacing can take more than an hour to complete, depending on whether you’re having a full-face treatment or just focusing on a few problem areas. A special numbing cream is applied at the beginning of your visit to reduce sensation in the treatment area.

A special gel is applied to your skin to ease the movement of the treatment handpiece. Southern Skin and Beauty Bar uses the PICO Genesis® FX platform by Cutera® for these treatments. You may feel mild heat during treatments, but there should be no significant pain. The treatment platform can be adjusted to deliver more or less laser energy as needed.

How much downtime does fractional resurfacing require?

Once your provider has treated all areas, any remaining gel is removed from your skin. You might feel a sensation like a sunburn for a few hours after your treatment, and some minor redness and swelling are also perfectly normal.

Within 3-5 days, most of the redness and swelling will be gone. You may experience a bronzing coloration of your skin within a day or two of your treatment. Skin flaking and peeling are also typical and indicate that the treatment is working as intended. Total downtime after fractional skin resurfacing is about a week, and wearing sunscreen is a must.

Most people benefit from a series of treatments spaced around one month apart. It takes time for the results to develop, but you can expect to see gradual improvements over the 3-4 months after your treatments.
